![]() I spent Christmas Eve reading it and loving it and just feeling seen, though "feeling seen" is not a phrase I picked up until sometime this century, and not particularly close to the beginning of it, either. He bought it, wrapped it, and made a special trip to bring it over to my house so I'd have it on time. Someone who knew me and picked it out for me himself- a Christmas gift given when this collection of strips was new, back in the '80s. This was one of the first gifts I ever got from a friend. I still love it, but now it's more for nostalgia's sake, I suppose. I loved this book and the silly record tucked inside it so much. ![]() (For those of you who are curious and/or keeping track, I am doing the KonMari method). ![]() ![]() Reviewing this now because, after owning it for over 30 years and only reading it once, it's time to finally say goodbye. ![]() Lost Boi by Sassafras Lowrey6/12/2023 ![]() Betty Berzon Emerging Writer Award in 2013). It seemed to fit into a growing body of literature that was literally remapping America through the experiences of trans / genderqueer punks, exploring our society from a marginal position that until recently, rarely had access to the machines of publishing (like Sybil Lamb's I've Got a Time Bomb or Lowrey's first novel, Roving Pack, which won Lowrey the Dr. I've known Lowrey since we worked together on an art show in 2014, and was intrigued when I heard about Lost Boi. Ze prefers gender-neutral pronouns, but isn't fussed by any particular language so much as the intent behind that language. ![]() Like many characters in the book, Lowrey is trans. And the Croc? That's heroin, the deadly addiction that's always snapping at Hook's heels. The Mermaids are tough-as-nails femmes who live on a boat named the Lagoon. ![]() Pan is their leader, their savior, and the "dom" to their "subs." Hook is an old-school top, the kind who talks about ritual and etiquette and doesn't allow any of his "pirates" to go into "battle" without having their leathers perfectly shined. Barrie's classic, the lost bois are trans kids who've banded together after being abandoned by their parents or failed by social services. Sassafras Lowrey's new novel, Lost Boi, reimagines Peter Pan for the genderqueer generation, with a coming-of-age story that is as tender as it is kinky, and as sweet as it is subversive. ![]() Abdellah taïa salvation army6/12/2023 ![]() The persistence of prejudices on all sides of the Mediterranean and Atlantic makes the translation of Taïa's work both a literary and political event. Recently hailed by his native country's press as "the first Moroccan to have the courage to publicly assert his difference," Taïa, through his calmly transgressive work, has "outed" himself as "the only gay man" in a country whose theocratic law still declares homosexuality a crime. In so doing, Salvation Army manages to burn through the author's first-person singularity to embody the complex mélange of fear and desire projected by Arabs on Western culture. Salvation Army is a coming-of-age novel that tells the story of Taïa's life with complete disclosure-from a childhood bound by family order and latent (homo)sexual tensions in the poor city of Salé, through an adolescence in Tangier charged by the young writer's attraction to his eldest brother, to a disappointing arrival in the Western world to study in Geneva in adulthood. An autobiographical novel by turn naïve and cunning, funny and moving, this most recent work by Moroccan expatriate Abdellah Taïa is a major addition to the new French literature emerging from the North African Arabic diaspora. ![]() ![]() An autobiographical coming-of-age novel by the the "only gay man" in Morocco. ![]() An Unlocked Heart by K.C. Given that she writes for kids, the Clementine series of novels are written to correct some environmental or social injustice. She is an impulsive and artistic child with red curls, who often finds herself in the principal’s bad books for her characteristic imperfections and lack of cooperation. The series follow she unintentionally devious, lovable, and eccentric eight-year-old girl Clementine as she navigates her third grade school and home life. What happens is Sara will typically write the stories after which Frazee will come in to impart the emotion and body language by drawing the pictures. The novels make use of the drawings to portray the relationship between the characters. Some of the most popular aspects of the series books are their illustrations, which are done by Marla Frazee who has been working on the novels right from the first novel. ![]() Following the massive commercial success of the first novel in the series, Pennypacker went on to write six more titles in the series, culminating in the seventh in the series “Completely Clementine” in 2015. The first novel in the series is the 2006 published “Clementine”, from which the series takes its name. Clementine is a series of children’s novels by New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Sara Pennypacker. ![]() |
